Intro to Humanitarian Aid
Shaping Policy in Response to Emergencies
“Over the years, many of my students have expressed an interest in Humanitarian Aid and International Development. This site is a response to those inquiries and a chance for me to share some of the work I have pursued in those areas in the past, along with my upcoming lectures and international fieldwork.
Humanitarian aid workers not only go out into the field to help the victims of complex emergencies but must also influence and shape policy in response to these emergencies.
The classroom is where this sort of discussion begins. It is vital to address international issues as well as the individual perspectives and responses to them to better understand how conflicts occur, how emergencies are analyzed, and how humanitarian interventions succeed.
This site encourages students to continue the education that began in the classroom by providing resources to organizations and research centers that examine complex humanitarian emergencies and human rights issues.
The currency and relevance of class discussion do not diminish because students no longer sit in a lecture hall. Once they engage in situations outside of the classroom, having a forum for discussions is equally necessary.
Currently, there is far more need for Humanitarian Assistance than resources to meet that need. I want to encourage my students to give their time, energy, and talent and prepare for the challenges they will face in the humanitarian field.
The links on this website will also take students to organizations I am affiliated with, information on my former and current projects, and research opportunities.
Through access to this information, my objective is to inspire students to continue pursuing knowledge of and working within the fields of global health, humanitarian aid, international development, and human rights.”
